Seoul - Pyeongchang will have full government support in its third attempt to bring the winter Olympics to South Korea, in 2018, Prime Minister Han Seung Soo said on Monday. "This time, the government will extend its maximum support to Pyeongchang," the outgoing PM Han was quoted as saying by the Yonhap news agency at the inaugural meeting of the bid committee.
The bid committee leadership was established at the meeting, with local governor Kim Jin Su and Cho Yang Ho, the head of the industrial conglomerate Hanjin, jointly heading the body.
The joint leadership was decided on by the South Korean sports ministry earlier this year.
Pyeongchang narrowly lost out for the 2010 Games to Vancouver and for the 2014 edition to Sochi. It now aims to come third time lucky, with Munich (Germany), Annecy (France) and possibly Harbin (China) the other candidates.
Bids must be registered by October 15 at the International Olympic Committee, which will elect the host city in 2011 during its session in Durban, South Africa.
